VMware, followed by Microsoft, dominates the enterprise market globally — with differing levels of adoption by geography and industry vertical — creating opportunities as well as threats for technology and service providers. Key Findings ■ The level of server virtualization usage continues to rise. Survey results show that the majority of server OS workloads are virtualized (with an average of 74.9% as of mid-2013). ■ The majority of organizations do not use a secondary and/or alternate hypervisor. Among the 30% that do, the most commonly cited reasons relate to workload-specific requirements, affinity for open source and technology/skills fit — much more than cost concerns. ■ Heterogeneous management remains low, with the vast majority of respondent organizations managing their main x86 server virtualization environment using the same vendor as their hypervisor. Only 9% of respondents used one or more third-party management tools in addition to the main vendors tools. ■ Asia will remain the engine room of new growth opportunity in 2014 and beyond. New approaches will be needed to overcome regional differences and differing behaviors that have curtailed adoption so far. Recommendations ■ VMware will retain its lead in enterprise market share for x86 server virtualization for the foreseeable future. Product managers should therefore maintain opportunities to supplement and/or extend their products in partnership with VMware, rather than in competition.
