Scope 3 Threading or Grooving Allowance 3 Steel Pipe Mechanical Strength Allowance 3 4.0 Corrosion Allowance 3 Table 1 Pipe System Corrosion Allowance 4 Scope: The additional thickness “A” used in ASME 31.1 piping minimum wall thickness, tm, calculation equation “3” or “3A” (paragraph 104.1.2A) consists of allowances for threading or grooving, mechanical strength, and corrosion. The “A” values to be used for these potential wall thinning considerations, when calculating piping minimum wall thickness, are addressed in this guideline for conventional, combined cycle or cogeneration piping system under the jurisdiction of ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code (including boiler external piping) of plant. 2.0 Threading or Grooving Allowance The threading allowance shall be as follows: Nominal Pipe Size Allowance (inch) ? inch and under 0.065 1 inch to 2 inch 0.0696 (1) 2 ? inch to 24 inch 0.100 (1) (1) For ASME B1.20.1 (NPT) threads only. This allowance shall be included for all orifice flange taps, valve body drains, threaded equipment casing vents and drains, and any other threaded or grooved piping (galvanized pipe, lined pipe, bronze valves etc.). Additional mandatory minimum requirements for threaded piping other than threading allowance in determining minimum pipe thickness are addressed in ASME paragraph 104.1.2 (C). For grooved pipe the allowance shall equal the depth of the cut plus a machining tolerance (If not specified, the tolerance shall be assumed to be 1/64 inch).
