An introduction to poetry Emily Dickson If I read a book and it makes my body so cold that no fire can ever warm me, I know that is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry. Nature of poetry The external, all those elements concerning the outer form of poetry. The internal, all those concerning the inner content of poetry. External: Metric. That is, the words are arranged according to some sort of rhythmical schemes. rhyme line and stanza. The sentences of poem are broken up into lines (usually shorter than prose lines) , the lines of a poem are sometimes grouped together into stanza. Internal qualities: The internal qualities constitute the true nature of poetry including the poet’s imaginative awareness, feeling, view of the experience, and attitudes towards the world. These poetic thoughts are the key to inspire the emotional response on the part of the reader. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach, when feeling out of sight for the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
