However, little is known abou t the varia tion s of the se m arkets acro ss village s. The overall goal of th is p ap er is to have better understanding of the charac teristic s of groundwater m arkets and its relation sh ip w ith water endowm en ts in northern Ch ina. B ased on our p rim a ry field survey data collected in H ebei and H enan p rovince s, ou r re su lts show that although there have been a rap id developm en t of groundwater m arkets in northern Ch ina, the developm ent ha s been very uneven acro ss region s. Mo reover, the characteristic s of groundwater m arkets also differ largely acro ss region s. Further analyses show that the m arket characteristic s are clo sely related w ith the local water re source endowm en ts. So before po licy m akers work ou t any po licy related to groundwater econom y, great difference s of the m arket op eration shou ld be taken in to ac count.
