The m ain objective s of th is p ap er are to describe the m ain characteristics of p articip ants of ru ral groundwater m arket and iden tify the determ inants of selling water. D ata u sed in th is research com es from 150 hou seho ld s in two p rovinces in northern Ch ina. B ased on our field survey, we find that the farm ers w ith h igher wealth , more advan tage in agricu ltu ral activity, and h igher social po sition are more likely to be the sellers. Tran s action co sts also have imp acts on p articip ants in the groundwater m arket.
