Spain 2 IFREMER - 155, rue JJ Rousseau 92138 Issy les Moulineaux France 3 IFREMER - BP 21105 44311 Nantes cedex 3 France Travail présenté au congrès mondial de laquaculture, à Nice (2-6 mai 2000) Abstract : The Mediterranean aquaculture has been developing significantly for the last 20 years, mainly thanks to the technical and commercial success of seabass Dicentrarchus labrax and seabream Sparus aurata fam1ing (production of 100000 t. expected in 2000). This rapid increase in the production is similar to what is observed in many countries where the steady demand of new products, reliable technologies and good quality site are secured at the same time. The Mediterranean presents specific characteristics : semi-closed sea, high tourism rate (l/3 world total), large markets, nearly non-existing aquaculture tradition, a dense research organisation limited to very few countries, pollution risks Aquaculture development in this region remains vulnerable in many aspects especially pathologic and environmental issues. Therefore, it is essential for it to anticipate the trend influencing the Mediterranean sea and evaluate the impacts on aquaculture. Prospective analysis Based on a retrospective analysis ofthe evolution ofthe aquaculture development for the last 20 years, the authors have, in a first step, identified the main trends influencing this sector and precised the key parameters of change enabling to build evolution scenarii by the year 2020.
