The problem may be caused by (1) ineffective uterine expulsive forces; (2) an abnormal lie; presentation, position, or fetal structure; (3) disproportion between the size of the fetus and pelvis, resulting in mechanical interference with the passage of the fetus through the birth canal. It is important that the cause or causes of abnormal labor be determined a
