Chinese Chopsticks Etiquette It does not matter whether you hold the chopsticks in the middle or at the end, but you should make sure that the ends are even. When not in use, chopsticks must always be placed neatly on the table with the two sticks lying tidily next to each other at both ends. It is impolite to use chopsticks to point at other people or to wave chopsticks around. Chinese Chopsticks Etiquette One should not “dig” or “search” through one’s food for something in particular. This is sometimes known as “digging one’s grave” or “grave-digging” and is extremely poor manners. Dropping chopsticks will inevitably bring bad luck. Putting chopsticks straight into the rice is not considered polite. Resting chopsticks at the top of the bowl means “I’ve finished”. Resting chopsticks on the side of ones bowl or on a chopstick stand signifies one is merely taking a break from eating. Crossed chopsticks show that your bill has been settled, or you can do the same to show the waiter that you have finished and are ready to pay the bill. Chinese Chopsticks Etiquette Make the elders have a sit first. Wash you hands before each meal. Don’t speak too loudly. You’d better not eat too fast or too much. Don’t speak with your mouth full of food. Make sure the spout of the teapot is not facing anyone. Never turn a fish over on its plate because people think it may bring bad luck. Table Manners in China Table Manners in the West Knife and spoon are placed to the right of the plate. The fork is on the left. You should use the fork with your left hand and the knife with your right hand. Wash your hands before each meal. Open the napkin and put it on your lap before eating. Don’t drink too much!
