Shenzhen Governm ent Investm ent Project Evaluation Center, Shenzhen 18036, China) Abstract: Th is paper seeks for a solution to reduce the ice jam s hazard in N ingxia-Inner Mongolia reaches of the Y ellow R iver. The reservoir can be used to raise thew ater level, increase the discharge capacity of drifted ice, re- duce the pondage in the river channel, low er the ice peak discharge in river-ice breakup period and avoid a great quantity of ice d ischarge. The d ischarge can be reduced via controlling the ice peak discharge and flood d ischarge. In themeantmi e, the role of reservoir in controlling the hazard of river ice can be fu lly exerted via adjusting the flow velocity variation of river reach inw inter based on the relation betw een the hydraulic factors and development of ice condition, so as to relieve the ice hazard.
