A Study of Metaphor-Loaded English Film-Titles: The Principles for TranslatingThem into Chinese Postgraduate:Sheng Zhengjuan Grade:2006 Major Field of Study: English Language Literature Supervisor: Bai Jingze Orientation: Translation Studies Practice Abstractin English With our government’s commitment to speeding up the opening up to the outside world and deepening the reform at home, ever-frequent cultural exchanges with the outside world have brought quite a few classic films dubbed in English to the Chinese audience, and they have played an important role in cultural exchanges—a phenomenon we cannot avert our attention from. Some U.S.-made English films, such as, Titanic 泰坦 尼克号，The Matrix 黑客帝国，Gone with the Wind 乱世佳人，WaterlooBridge 魂断蓝桥，Crash 撞车 and so on, have left so fresh and deep an impression on the Chinese audience. From the perspective of translation, however, we must see that an issue coupled with this phenomenon is how to render the titles of the English films in Chinese, those that carry the metaphorical significance in particular. There are quite a few metaphor- loaded English film titles that will fail to arouse the anticipatory cultural interest and that will even mar the box-value, if translated into Chinese inappropriately. What stated above has formed the motivation of this research and the key problem that this dissertation attempts to solve. Based on the down-to-the-last-detail analysis of the collected data and the metaphorical cognition theory, what has been dealt with in this dissertation is the essence of the related translating practice and the relevant strategies.
