Glass for Backlights: A Possible Game-Changer for LCD and OLEDPosted by?Tadashi Uno?in?DisplaySearch,?TVs?on January 8, 2015 ?|??0?CommentsAt?CES 2015, Corning unveiled its new glass product, Iris, which focuses on the light-guide plate (LGP) in edge-lit LCD?TVs.?Current LGPs in LCD backlight units are made with acrylic, but Corning has proposed a new revolutionary material, glass. The announcement has ignited several discussions in the industry. Will glass in backlights be a game-changer for LCD?TV and OLED?TV?Corning announced that Iris glass is 36?times stronger than plastic acrylic LGP and can enable a super-slim TV set design. Edge-lit LCD?TVs mainly use acryl LGPs with 3-5?mm thickness, which has made it difficult to reduce the TV set’s thickness. Iris could allow new ultra-slim LCD?TVs that are able to challenge the slimness advantage of OLED?TV.We estimate that glass LGP thickness is around 1-2?mm. Compared to acrylic, a 1?mm glass LGP could reduce the thickness by 75% and weight by 32%. A glass LGP can enable TV set designs that are less than 5?mm.At the same?CES?show, Sony demonstrated a super-slim 4.9?mm LCD?TV. Dubbed a “floating design,” Sony’s new XBR X900C (55” and 65”) and X901C (75”) 4K Bravia TVs had almost frameless bodies. Although not identified, we believe these TVs used glass LGPs.Figure 1: Sony 4.9?mm UHD TV at CES 2015Sharp also demonstrated a 70” ultra-slim LCD?TV at Corning’s?CES?booth, adopting Corning’s Iris glass for the LGP.Figure 2: Sharp’s 70” Ultra-Slim TV at Corning’s CES BoothHowever, LCD TV and its components, such as backlight units and optical film, are maturing. With direct-lit LED?TV models prevailing, which do not necessary use an LGP, the LGP market is facing some difficulty in growing. So why would a big player like Corning want to enter the LGP and backlight business? We believe the reason is that glass and TV maker demand is beginning to match.Glass makers want to increase the glass business beyond LCD substrates, and gl
