Analysis of Different Concepts about Marriage in Pride and Prejudice
Abstract: Pride and Prejudice is the most successful and popular masterpiece written by Jane Austen, being the representative of realistic literature. From the viewpoint of Austen, Elizabeth’s marriage, who finally marries Darcy, as well as Jane-Bingley’s, composing money and love, is the ideal marriage people. But in other marriage cases at this novel, we can see that if money and love can’t be held together in one marriage, love would always make a concession to money because of the special social background.

This novel analyses the human nature and then sticks up readers to think over social relations, it takes five ladies’ marriage as the thread and it covers the inheritance of fortune, women’s social status, moral values and customs.
1 The Marriage Founded upon Vanity and hastiness
The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet is a carelessness one, a union of an intelligent man with a foolish wife. Their relationship is purely physical and based on superficial grounds. Mr. Bennet’s lack of satisfaction in his marriage leads him to flee himself from reality, failing to get himself and his wife to a successful relationship. Like the Bennets, the marriage between Lydia and Wickham is also flawed. Their relationship is one physical desire outweighs other reasons, with their passions stronger than their virtue. Lydia’s desire for social status and Wickham’s desire for financial lead them to marry for totally wrong reasons. By breaking the rules of the society, their marriage is doomed to fail.
Wickhame first appears as a very charming fellow. But his character, on the contrary, was mean and immoral. His elope with Lydia is very sudden. It really leaves us room to think over his real motivation.
