Vanuatu Vanuatu is an island nation located in the south pacific Ocean. Flag Coat of arms History The Vanuatu was first discovered by Europeans in 1606. this year a Portuguese explorer arrived in vanuatu,but he thought he had arrived in Australia. From 1887 to 1980. the Vanuatu was ruled by France and Britain. So today the official language of vanuatu is English and French. In1980, the Vanuatu gained Independence and join British commonwealth of nations. Commonwealth of Nations After World War I, the colonies of Britain competed for independent. In the 1920s, the British began to consider relaxing the policy to allow the independence of colonies. In 1931, the Congress passed an Act and created the British Commonwealth of Nations The British Commonwealth of Nations asked its member treat each other based on common historical background, bulit the relationship between freedom and equality. In 1949, its name was changed to the Commonwealth of Nations. Geography The Republic of Vanuatu is an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. The country is located some 1,750 km east of Australia, 500 km north-east of New Caledonia, west of Fiji and south of the Solomon Islands. Vanuatu is an 83-island archipelago, two of which are also claimed by the French overseas department. Most of the islands are mountainous and of volcanic origin, and have a tropical or sub-tropical climate. Vanuatus total area is about 12,274 square kilometres while its land base is very limited (roughly 4,700 square kilometres) most of the islands are steep, with unstable soils. One estimate (2005) is only 9% of land is used for agriculture . The Vanuatu has 83 islands and 65 of them inhabited. The Vanuatu is the birthplace of bungee jumping.
