Pollution: As a result of industrialization and mass production, abundant goods are available in the global market. Along with the consumption and production, individual customers and companies are producing a sheer amount of rubbish, which is not healthy and even harmful to our planet. Diverse reasons lead to the increasing amount of rubbish produced. On the top of the list is the growth in disposable income and affordable products, which stimulate the purchasing power and the number of transactions in total. The more goods/commodities people consume, the more they are likely to dispose of the packaging and remains. Another contributor is the insufficiency of knowledge on how to tackle the items that can be reused or recycled. Living in a throw-away society, mankind become indifferent towards the invaluable items, resulting in a vicious cycle of ignoring limited resource and consuming new ones. To solve the deteriorating problem, governments should seek improvements in terms of policies, education and technology. Primarily, environmentally relevant policies and legislation should be set up to regulate citizens’ behaviour. Secondarily, governments should corporate with the mass media in arousing people’s awareness of threatening consequences of producing rubbish, combined with useful methods to recycle the used products. Public-interest advertisement and even distribution of dustbins and signs will be of great help. Also, investments in research and development, such as degradable packaging will be significantly helpful in restoring the damages caused and reducing the negative effects of rubbish overload. Where to live? Urban or countryside? With population explosion and limited resources, the globe is under pressure of unsustainable development and worsening environment.
