E-mail has been the preferred means of communication for its immediacy and convenience. This graduation project is basically about building a practicable and simple mail server through postfix, which makes preparation for the further development. This project principally launches the study around five aspects. The first is that users can use the ID of Linux to login, send and receive e-mails when they implement the password authentication service by Cyrus-sasl software. Secondly, implementing the authentication mechanism through STMP, the users can use the password to log on to the STMP server to send the e-mail. Third, implementing POP3’s receiver function by dovecot software. Furthermore, when implementing the correct analysis of e-mail server address, users can receive and send e-mail by using username @ mail server domain name. Moreover, people can login, check and send emails in the web client by exerting Squirrel Mail software, which avoids downloading and installing client when using the mail sever. Take evolution and thunderbird software as examples. It proves that you can use the e-mail system which is configured to achieve the function of sending and receiving mails as well as uploading and downloading attachment via the correct configuration.
