The writer Thomas Hardy（1840-1928） was a famous British poet and novelist. He was regarded as Shakespeare in English novelist by the critics. This novel mainly talked about a beautiful, pure and kind-hearted girl –Tess’s tragic life, then to express the deep moral sympathy to those women who lived in the underclass and rural area. Kind-hearted Tess should have enjoyed the sweet love and happy marriage, but on the contract, her life road is rough and bumpy. This thesis will try to do some studies and analysis from the following three points to find out the real root causes of tragedies, the social factors, the fatalism and the personal character in the novel. Just hope all of us can have a good knowledge of Tess’s tragic life after reading this thesis.
