ALL FAILED!!!!! 1950’s Challenges to “The Code”: Adult Themes Explored filmmakers started criticizing the code as limiting to artistic freedom filmmakers stopped following rules 1st film released without a seal: The Moon is Blue (1953), a sex comedy that used words like “virgin,” “pregnant,” “seduce,” and “mistress.” It was condemned by the Catholic League of Decency, received 3 Oscar nominations, and did very well at the box office. 1951 A Streetcar Named Desire. Brando as raw, crude, sexual man. Condemned by the Catholic League of Decency for its bold content. Violated “The Code” by referencing nymphomania and rape. 1953 From Here to Eternity. Contained a questionable on the beach lovemaking scene and an adulterous relationship. “The Code” eventually was revised slightly to permit references to drugs, abortion and prostitution. Controversy- From Here to Eternity 乱世忠魂 C.flv 1960’s - Present 1960’s ? New rating system replaces “The Code”. More graphic and slightly political content begins appearing in films—lots of rebel/outlaw films like Easy Rider. Midnight Cowboy, an X-rated film wins an Oscar!!! 1970’s ? Lots of lower budget political films. Some strong independent American filmmakers emerge — Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg…to name a few.
