Lab infrastructure may be utilized not only by application development and test teams but also support organizations, training departments, and sales and marketing engineers that need intermittent access to system configurations for development and testing purposes, to create and trouble-shoot customer support issues, set up training labs and give sales demos. Supporting and maintaining lab infrastructure, and responding to the many provisioning requests to set up, configure or tear down system configurations in the lab is a huge burden for lab admins. It’s not unusual for the application development and QA organization to utilize 2-3 times the number of servers required for production, so server sprawl is one of the issues a lab admin has to deal with. The other challenge is that of keeping the systems in consistent known state – if multiple users have access to the same systems, it’s not only likely, it’s practically guaranteed that the systems will become “dirty” – settings will be inadvertently changed for example, which means that the next person who uses it doesn’t really know the state of the system.
