Up to H1 2012, the total capacity of China’s CTL projects under construction or in FEED stage is more than 20Mt/a, with over CNY 200 billion capital investment, the key investors including Shenhua, Yitai, Lu’An, Shenhua Ningxia Coal (Shenhua Ningmei) and Yankuang. 棗Shenhua Group Shenhua Ordos 1 Mt/a direct CTL (DCTL) demonstration project was started up in December 2008, through a series of process improvements and rectifications, realized safe and stable operation for a long period. Most of performance indices, including operating flexibility, load rate, on-stream rate, oil yield, and energy conversion efficiency etc, all reached the design specification. In H1 2011, the project output 467 kt of oil products and contributed CNY 800 million of profit and taxes, showing good economic return. In July 2011, the “Mega Size Coal Direct Liquefaction (DCTL) Key Technology Demonstration”, as a national major energy strategic project, passed expert appraisal. The planned total capacity of Shenhua Ordos DCTL project is 5Mt/a. Currently, Shenhua Group is carrying out preparations for the follow-up CTL lines. Also, In Ordos, Shenhua plans to build the indirect CTL (ICTL) units, by blending of ICTL and DCTL oil products, to improve the quality and market competitiveness of CTL products. 棗Yitai Group Yitai Ordos 160kt/a indirect CTL project started demonstration operation in 2009. In 2011, the plant was kept in effective operation for 328 days and output 152kt of oil products. Net profit of the project in H2 2011 was CNY 27.47 million. Yitai planned CTL and other coal
