Words like can, will, may, must, and a few others are called modals. Modal verbs help other verbs express a meaning or an idea. Some common uses of the modals are these: Ability: 1 He can speak English now. 2 He couldn’t speak English a year ago. 3 I’m not able to come to the game on Friday. Permission: All passengers may now board. We can board now. Obligation: You must fasten your seat belts. (strong) You should pay attention. (weak) You ought to pay attention. Possibility: 1 It may rain. 2 How could I forget an important thing like that? 3 He can’t /couldn’t have known the result. Meanings similar to those of the modals can often be conveyed by real verb forms: He has to……………………….=…must… is able to…speak English… =…can… is allowed to……………....=…may… is supposed to……………=…should… can/could的主要用法是： A.? ___________：能，能力 eg. The girl can dance very well. The boy could speak 3 languages at 12. B.? _____________： 有时可能/会 eg. Even experienced teacher can make mistakes. 表示惊异、怀疑、不相信 eg. Can the news be true? How could he be so careless 1. 表示请求（请求别人允许自己做某事）和允许（允许别人做）。表示请求、允许时，might比may的语气更委婉一些。肯定回答不用could/might. 4. may well+do： 很可能 e.g. Liza may well not want to go on the trip. - she hates traveling. may/ might as well+do： 不妨/最好 e.g. You may as well stay for dinner. we might as well go and have a look. must 表“必须” “一定要” The doctor told me I must stop smoking. Must I go at once? No, you needn’t/don’t have to. The child is sleeping. You mustn’t make any noise. 表示推测：一定，肯定，准是，只用于肯 定句。 e.g. That must be my pen. The lights were on. he must have been at home. He must be writing a letter to his girlfriend now. 3. 表示“偏偏，硬要”表某事
