Aerosol and Haze Observations with the FASTNET Distributed Monitoring System. The goal of the EPA visibility program is to achieve natural visibility conditions by 2064. The goal of this project, Fast Aerosol Sensing for Natural Event Tracking (FASNET) is to characterize natural haze conditions, through the detailed analysis of major natural aerosol events. In FASTNET, near-real-time access to the distributed data is accomplished either by direct transfer from the provider, or by daily (hourly) data caching in the DataF data sharing system. The infrastructure also provides for current and continuing archival of data which are not efficiently archived by providers, allowing for direct comparisons with “slower” data, such as the detailed chemical composition data from the IMPROVE aerosol sampling. The result of this data integration infrastructure is that aerosol patterns can be monitored within hours or a day from the observation time, and can subsequently be combined with the detailed aerosol composition data which form the basis of the EPA Regional haze regulatory program.
