Chapter 1 Pre-Renaissance British Literature Angle-Saxon, Middle period Major knowledge points: Old English Literature (before 1066): Beowulf 《贝奥武甫 》 Middle Age Literature (1066-1400): Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales《坎特伯雷故事集》 An Old English heroic epic poem consisting of 3182 alliterative long lines, set in Scandinavia, commonly cited as one of the most important works of Anglo-Saxon literature. Its composition by an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet is dated between the 8th and the early 11th century. I. Verse form Alliterative verse is a form of verse that uses alliteration as the principal structuring device to unify lines of poetry, as opposed to other devices such as rhyme. The most commonly studied traditions of alliterative verse are those found in the oldest literature of many Germanic languages. This is a technique in which the first half of the line (the a-verse) is linked to the second half (the b-verse) through similarity in initial sound. A long-line is divided into two half-lines. Half-lines are also known as verses; the first is called the a-verse, the second the b-verse. A heavy pause, separates the verses. Each verse usually has two strongly stressed syllables. The first stressed syllable in the b-verse nearly always alliterated with either or both stressed syllables in the a-verse. The second stressed syllable in the b-verse does not alliterate with the stressed syllables in the a-verse.
