Rhyme scheme The poem belongs to a Petrarchan sonnet in form. The natural ordering is protest in the octave rhyming abba abba and acceptance in the sestet cde cde. Theme The theme of the poem is about frustration in life and reconciliation to his lot. In the octave, the speaker complains about the unfairness of God; meanwhile, he is afraid that God might reproach him for not using his abilities to the full, even though he is blind. Before he can foolishly complain that God asks too much of him, Patience tells him (in the sestet) that God does not need man’s gifts because He is self-sufficient. The best service to God is devout obedience; whatever we do, we are acting according to God’s will. Conclusion So from this sonnet, we can feel Milton’s personality of religious peity and his virtuous modesty.
