It was a military conflict between the United States of America (the Union) and the Confederate States of America (the Confederacy) from 1861 to 1865. It began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate army opened fire on Fort Sumter（萨姆特堡） in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, and lasted until May 26, 1865, when the last Confederate army surrendered. The commander-in-chief of the Union was General Ulysses Grant（格兰特将军）and the commander-in-chief of the Confederacy was General Robert Lee（罗伯特·李将军） The chief and immediate cause of the war was slavery. The Union, under the leadership of Lincoln, defeated the Confederacy at last after 4 years of hard struggle. The war took more than 600,000 lives, destroyed property valued at $5 billion, brought freedom to 4 million black slaves, and opened wounds that have not yet completely healed more than 140 years later. The American Civil War has had a far-reaching influence on the United States. Thanks to the War, the Union was saved and the slavery system came to an end, which has paved the way for the development of America’s capitalism. And at the same time it has taught the American people a lesson. From the horrific casualties（伤亡） of the two sides of the War, the American people have come to realize that, no matter it be a family or a country, there is no winner if brothers fight against each other. Therefore, they value unity all the more. And after that there has never been a civil war in
