Writing for publicationScottish Clinical Skills Network Workshop ProgrammeJanuary 19th 2007, Aberdeen Professor John Spencer Publish or perish Survival in academia and advancement in training depend upon publication Possibly more than ever before Size matters! Impact factor; citations However ‘Everyone agrees that we have too much to read, that journals are inefficient at putting across the messages, and that too many people are having to write second rate papers purely to put on their curriculum vitae.’ (Albert T. Thinking the unthinkable. BMJ 1999;319:861) Journal criteria Critical appraisal: ask yourself and answer at least the following questions: Who was this written for? What is the author trying to achieve why? What did they do? What did they find? So what? The review process Medical Education uses double blinded review process But reviewers are invited to reveal themselves (although few do!) Common recommendations Rewrite in correct format Shorten – too long for the message it contains Get to the point Put in context; clearer argument Discussion in Results, vice versa Make the conclusions fit the data, not the author’s opinions References More up to date Internationalise If asked to revise, do it quickly. If rejected, don’t give up! Final thought The Journal’s main responsibilities are towards its readers, not the authors Style matters The malaise of medical manuscripts (From: Goodman NW, Edwards MB. Medical writing: a prescription for clarity (2nd edition). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1997.) ‘……The function of language is to convey meaning.’ (Sir George Pickering, 1968) ‘……medical writing in English is often bad to the point of dreadful.’ Read your target journal Ensure paper appropriate for Journal - read mission statement - recent editions - read guidance for authors Keep the journal readership in mind as you write Follow format e.g. IMRAD Some big issues Authorship Salami Conflicts of interest Ethics Authorship Uniform requireme
