One of the earliest forms was asimple wire stretched parallel to the ground roll which was covered by a dielectric such aspolyester wrapping. The wire electrode (see Figure 10) accomplished its purpose, but providedsuch a narrow corona that the dwell time, the time which the substrate actually spent in thepresence of corona, was exceedingly short. In addition, the power level that could be appliedwas extremely limited by the cross section capacity of the wire and its ability to dissipate heatgenerated during treatment.
