Revolution in your pocket! 76% of students who state that at least one of their classes have academic content delivered to them through podcasts (Apple’s J. Couch, 2006) “Why I’m Not Smoking the Podcasting Dope” (Blog- Barefoot, 2005) Not everyone is a believer! (i)POD + (Broad)casting = Podcasting An audioblog that one can listen to rather than read (Williams Tollett, 2007) A series of portable sound files, hosted on the web, and distributed via a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed. (King Dura, 2007) A method of distributing multi-media files (e.g. audio, video) over the internet using syndication feeds for playback on cell phones and computers (Wikipedia, 2006) Like radio, both the content and the method of delivery. Essential elements of a podcast Summary of Characteristics The podcast is more than an MP3 file posted on the Web ? it is a series that is automatically sent to the user’s computer due to the XML program language A podcast is portable, personal, and powerful The MP3 format makes it portable The XML makes it personal because you select it and it is delivered to your desktop The combination makes it anytime, anywhere and therefore a powerful tool for teaching and learning (King D
