The evaluation of fractional digestion rate of dietary carbohydrate and protein and its application

School of Agricultural Biotechnology, Seoul National University, Seoul, 151-921, Korea The evaluation of fractional digestion rate of dietary carbohydrate and protein and its application for synchronization in the rumen H. J. Kim, S. Y. Lee, J. K. Back, D. S. Lee, P. Santi, H. G. Sung, and, J. K. Ha Introduction Synchronizing the availability of energy and nitrogen in the rumen is considered as a potential means of enhancing the output of rumen microbial protein . It may be possible to manipulate the rate of fermentation in the rumen by varying the sources and types of carbohydrate and protein in diets . Synchronizing of releasing rate of energy and nitrogen is to increase microbial protein synthesis by capturing ammonia nitrogen rapidly released from the protein sources, and to increase of microbial protein flow into duodenum Many researches have being conducted to overcome supply of unbalancing nitrogen and energy to rumen and low efficiency of microbial protein synthesis, and so on . The purpose of this study was to evaluate the carbohydrate and nitrogen degradation rate in the rumen of diets to determine the synchrony index (SI) in the model of CNCPS (2005) to develop a techniques for diet formulation considering SI Objectives Materials Methods Animals : Two rumen canulated Holstein steers Sources : 4 Forages, 4 proteins, 3 by-products and one energy source (total 12) Incubation : 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 24 hours Analysis : Carbohydrate (A, B1, B2, C), Protein (A, B1, B2, B3, C), according to CNCPS, for incubated residues. Calculation : Curve fitting for each fractional degradability : McDonald Orskov model Hourly effective fractional degradabilities(RFD) of protein and CHO were calculated using the equation of Sinclair et al. (1993): RFD = A + B[(B x c)/(c +Kp ) ] x [1 –
