A Model for Detection of Changes in the Drinking Behaviour of Young Pigs Thomas Nejsum Madsen The National Committee for Pig Production DANISH BACON AND MEAT COUNCIL Axelborg Axeltorv 3 1609 K?benhavn V Denmark tnm@danskeslagterier.dk Abstract This contribution describes a method for monitoring the condition of young pigs by mea- suring their water intake. Water flow-meters and micro computers have been installed in 4 production units for young pigs, located on 3 different farms in Denmark. Water consumption data was aggregated into 1 hour intervals. The pigs showed a very stabile diurnal drinking pattern as long as they were healthy whereas the pattern often changed when the pigs were affected by a disease. A method using a state-space model in conjunction with a Cusum control chart is pre- sented as a tool for on-line monitoring of young pigs, based on their water consumption. By an example it is shown that an outbreak of a disease (diarrhoea) can be detected by the monitoring method approx. one day before physical signs are seen on the pigs. 1 Introduction Decisions for the management of weaners and finishers are usually based on subjective judgements of the manager. The basis for these judgements are commonly visual obser- vations in the herd, perhaps combined with the results of monthly or quarterly production reports. Because of the general trend toward larger herds and more animals managed per person, there seems to be an increasing need for automatic systems monitoring the productivity and health status of the pigs. Examples of monitoring systems within the agricultural business are, monitoring daily milk yields in dairy cows [10], a model for detection of oestrus and diseases in dairy cattle based on time series analysis [5], detec- tion of changes in feed consumption in broilers [7] and detection of changes in daily milk production [9]. Common for all these monitoring systems are, that they have to solve two problems: 1. generate an automatic method for co
