The proposedschemes are based on a slicing technique and use aggressive methods for admissioncontrol. We have developed two types of admission control schemes: Future-Max(FM) and Interval Estimation (IE). The FM algorithm uses the maximum bandwidthrequirement of the future to estimate the bandwidth requirement. The IE algorithmdenes a class of admission control schemes that use a combination of the maximumand average bandwidths within each interval to estimate the bandwidth requirementof the interval. The performance evaluations done through simulations show that theserver utilization is improved by using the FM and IE algorithms. Furthermore, thequality of service is also improved by using the FM and IE algorithms. Several resultsdepicting the trade-o between the implementation complexity, desired accuracy, thenumber of accepted requests, and the quality of service are presented.Key Words: Admission Control, Future-Max Algorithm, Interval Estimation Algorithm,Multimedia Storage Server, Quality of Service.1This research was supported in part by the National Science Foundation through the grants MIP-9628801 and CCR-9634547. A multimedia system requires the integration ofcommunication, storage, retrieval, and presentation mechanisms for diverse data typesincluding text, images, audio, and video to provide a single unied information system.The po
