The modulation depth nearly reaches to 90%. We think this phenomenon should not be attributed to the Kerr effect of the gain medium. Finally it is explained by introduction of gain-related effects. Key Words: Q-switched mode-locking, Nd:YVO4, gain-related effects Introduction Mode locking has been nearly the most effective technique to give birth to ultrashort and powerful pulses which have many important applications. By enforcing coherence between the phases of different longitudinal models, short pulses can be attained. Under the aspect of diode pumping, passive mode locking is more potential because of its compactness, high efficiency and robustness, i.e. Kerr lens mode- locking (KLM) [1,2] or semiconductor saturable mirrors mode-locking (SESAMs) [3,4]. Comparing with continues wave mode-locking, Q-switched mode-locking (QML) is a comparatively especial operation manner which the mode-locked pulses are modulated by a Q-switched pulse envelope.
