Abstract
Background: The United States FDA approved an over-the-counter HIV self-test, to facilitate increased HIV testing and
earlierlinkagetocare.Weassessedtheaccuracyofself-testingbyuntrainedparticipantscomparedtohealthcareworker
(HCW)testing,participants’abilitytointerpretsampleresultsanduser-acceptabilityofself-testsinSingapore.
Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Across-sectionalstudy,involving200knownHIV-positivepatientsand794unknownHIV
statusat-riskparticipantswasconducted.Participants(allwithoutpriorself-testexperience)performedself-testingguided
solelybyvisualinstructions,followedbyHCWtesting,bothusingtheOraQuickADVANCERapidHIV1/2AntibodyTest,with
both results interpreted by the HCW. To assess ability to interpret results, participants were provided 3 sample results
(positive, negative, and invalid) to interpret. Of 192 participants who tested positive on HCW testing, self-testing was
positivein186(96.9%),negativein5(2.6%),andinvalidin1(0.5%).Of794participantswhotestednegativeonHCWtesting,
self-testingwasnegativein791(99.6%),positivein1(0.1%),andinvalidin2(0.3%).Excludinginvalidtests,self-testinghad
sensitivityof97.4%(95%CI95.1%to99.7%)andspecificityof99.9%(95%CI:99.6%to100%).Wheninterpretingresults,
96%,93.1%and95.2%correctlyreadthepositive,negativeandinvalidrespectively.Therewerenosignificantdemographic
predictorsforfalsenegativeself-testingorwronglyinterpretingpositiveorinvalidsampleresultsasnegative.Eighty-seven
