Performance Anxiety(渴望) Like many new technologies, digital video has a somewhat checkered(波折) past: products released(发布) before their time, CPU-hungry technologies running on under-powered (动力不足的)machines, and jerky(不平稳的), fuzzy, postage-stamp video touted(吹捧为) as the second coming of the GUI[1]. But video on the PC has a unique Achilles’heel(唯一致命的弱点) best typified by the question “Why does video look better on my $200 TV?” Well, it is simple: Video is analog; computers are digital. Computers cant handle analog information directly---they have to simulate it. Computers start by digitizing the video, or by dividing the analog frame into individual picture elements (pixels). A 640-by-480 frame requires 307,200 pixels, each of which takes one byte to store. Add the 24-bit color depth necessary for high-quality video and youve tripled the storage requirement to 921,600 bytes per frame. At 30 frames per second, youre up to 9.2 million pixels and over 27 MB of data -- each second! This not only presents tremendous storage and bandwidth problems, its more data than even the most powerful desktop computer can handle in real time[2]. A number of simple “scaling” (缩放比例)techniques are used to reduce the load. The first is to shrink the image size. Quarter-screen video (320-by-240) requires one quarter the bandwidth of full-screen video (640-by-480), which brings you down to 6.912 megabytes per second.
