Abstract: Accurate ?ltering of physiological tremor is extremely important in robotics
assistedsurgicalinstrumentsandprocedures.Thispaperfocusesondevelopingsinglestage
robustalgorithmsforaccuratetremor?lteringwithaccelerometersforreal-timeapplications.
Existing methods rely on estimating the tremor under the assumption that it has a single
dominantfrequency.Ourtime-frequencyanalysisonphysiologicaltremordatarevealedthat
tremorcontainsmultipledominantfrequenciesovertheentiredurationratherthanasingle
dominantfrequency. Inthispaper, theexistingmethodsfortremor?lteringarereviewed
andtwoimprovedalgorithmsarepresented. Acomparativestudyisconductedonallthe
estimationmethodswithtremordatafrommicrosurgeonsandnovicesubjectsunderdifferent
conditions. Ourresultsshowedthatthenewimprovedalgorithmsperformedbetterthanthe
existingalgorithmsfortremorestimation.Aproceduretoseparatetheintendedmotion/drift
fromthetremorcomponentisformulated.
