Self Supporting Runflat (SSR) Tire Brochure
Your vehicle is equipped with Continental SSR Tires. SSR stands for Self Supporting
Runflat tire technology. Continental SSR Tires are designed to keep your vehicle mobile
under normal highway conditions up to 50 miles (80 kilometres) at speeds up to 50 mph
(80 km/h) even if a tire is deflated. You also avoid the inconvenience of having to
immediately change a deflated tire.
When a conventional tire without Continental SSR technology suffers significant air loss,
the rim presses on the collapsed sidewalls along with the full weight of the vehicle. The
conventional tire is then normally destroyed within a short distance. Continental SSR
technology is designed to prevent this from occurring so as to maintain vehicle mobility.
Your Continental SSR tires are designed with sturdy, reinforced sidewalls that help to
support your vehicle’s weight when your tires are deflated. The run-flat properties of
these tires are so effective that you may not notice your tires are deflated. For this
reason, Continental SSR tires must be used only in conjunction with a fully functioning
tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Your vehicle manufacturer incorporated
TPMS in your vehicle to alert you when there is a significant loss of air pressure. When
your vehicle manufacturer has also incorporated Electronic Stability Control (ESC) in
your vehicle to enhance stability in extreme driving conditions, then please ensure that
ESC is engaged if the TPMS alerts you about an air pressure loss.
Statistics show that it is rare for a driver to experience a flat tire. With Continental
SSR tires, there is no need to carry a spare tire/wheel assembly or jack. This saves
room and weight.
What to do if a Continental SSR tire deflates.
If you lose tire inflation pressure your vehicle can remain mobile and you can continue
on your way by observing the following:
- Do not exceed a speed of 50 mph (80 km/h).
- Avoid extreme driving co
