Welcome to theDinosaur World dinosaur Dinosaurs Dinosaurs lived on earth more than sixty million years ago. This was a long time before people existed. There were millions of dinosaurs. They lived everywhere. Some were as small as chickens. Others were as big as ten elephants. Some dinosaurs had wings and could fly. Dinosaur Shapes and Sizes Dinosaurs varied greatly in size and shape, ranging from the giant Apatosaurus, which grew to lengths of 24 m (80 ft), to the Compsognathus, a small predator about 60 cm (2 ft) tall, or about the same size as a modern-day goose. The pterosaurs were the first noninsect animals to develop flapping flight. Many dinosaurs were harmless. They were as gentle as sheep and ate plants. Others were harmful. They were fiercer than tigers and meat, unlike most other dinosaurs. Diplodocus was a sauropod dinosaur that lived about 150 million years ago. The longest complete dinosaur skeleton ever found is a Diplodocus skeleton. It measures 26.5 m (87 ft) from the tip of its snout to the end of its tail. Iguanodon Iguanodon was a plant-eating dinosaur that lived about 130 million years ago. It may have used its bony, spike-shaped thumbs to defend itself. Dinosaurs all died suddenly. Nobody knows why. We know about the lives of dinosaurs from the skeletons, eggs and footprints they left behind.
