* * * * Injury to the brain AFTER the birth process. * Classification. As stated previously children who have received traumatic brain injuries from an open head injury, closed head injury, or a near drowning and have resulting educational difficulties can qualify for special education services under the IDEA category of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). If the student received a brain injury from an internal cause and has resulting educational difficulties, he or she can qualify for special education services under the IDEA category of Other Health Impaired (OHI). * * Brain cells are different from skin, bone, or muscle cells. When you break a bone, the physician aligns the two broken pieces next to each other, and the body produces new bone cells to join the broken bones together. This does not happen to brain cells, called neuron’s. Once a neuron is torn apart, or starved for nutrients due to blood/oxygen/glucose deprivation, then that neuron dies, and neural transmission (thinking skill) is negatively affected. * * The demand for glucose outpaces bloodflow during the first few days following concussion. Another concussion during this period can lead to irreparable damage or even death. * 15 Here are the most common symptom sets reported. The ones in the grey oval are particularly critical for school performance, though all symptoms can combine to negatively impact school performance, without intervention. * * 15 * * Due to the metabolic imbalance that occurs following a concussion, it has been shown that increased blood flow to the brain during recovery may impede or slow down the recovery process and worsen the symptoms of concussion. Most patients do not need to be placed on bed rest unless they are having severe symptoms (severe headaches, marked photophobia, disorientation, balance problems, extreme fatigue, etc). They may participate in any activity that doesnt cause increased symptoms (headaches). In some cases, activities such as reading, watching TV,
