My Typology of Dictionaries 王程程 Typology of dictionaries: Classification by languages concerned: monolingual dictionary bilingual dictionary multilingual dictionary Classification by content: general-purpose dictionary encyclopedic dictionary specialized dictionary Classification by size: unabridged dictionary desk dictionary concise dictionary pocket dictionary gem dictionary Classification by order of word-entry: alphabetical order other order Classification by target users: dictionary for native speaker dictionary for foreign language speaker Here I mainly give five kinds of classifications of dictionaries as I think these five could cover the majority of dictionaries on the market. The most conspicuous feature of dictionaries is the languages used, so I classify dictionaries according to this feature in the first place. I also think this classification could include nearly all the dictionaries. Then I divide dictionaries according to the content as content is a fairly important standard to evaluate the quality of dictionaries. On the other hand, this division could show some light to the compilers’ purpose for different target users. At last, dictionaries are categorized concerning the size because users always pay attention to the size when they are choosing dictionaries for their different requirements. The order of word-entry is especially important for users, so there is necessity to give them some guidance to facilitate their consult. At last, some dictionaries are compiled for different target users. As a result, I divide dictionaries according to the arrangement of word-entry and different target users separately.
