Unit One Low-carbon Economy What are Greenhouse Gases and Greenhouse Effect? A greenhouse is made of glass and is used for growing plants. The air inside is warm because the glass traps the heat from the sun and keeps it from escaping. This makes the greenhouse heat up and so the plants can grow throughout the cold period. Composition of Atmosphere Those gases perform the same function as the glass in the glasshouse: they trap the heat of the sun and keep the air surrounding the earth warm. Hence, the name “greenhouse gases” comes. The primary greenhouse gases in the Earths atmosphere are: water vapor carbon dioxide methane（ CH4） nitrous oxide一氧化二氮 ozone （ O3 ） Greenhouse gases act like a blanket, keeping some of the heat in and turning the globe into a green house. This is called Greenhouse Effect. There are two meanings of the term “greenhouse effect”—“Natural“ vs “Man-made greenhouse effect “Natural greenhouse effect: keeps the Earths climate warm and habitable; vital to the survival of human beings. “Man-made greenhouse effect: the enhancement of Earths natural greenhouse effect due to increasing carbon dioxide concentration from the burning of fossil fuels (mainly petroleum, coal, and natural gas).
