Earth Science Fr ontiers , 2006, 13( 6) :052-063 Abstract: Recently, the thinning of the cont inental lit hosphere in the North China has become one of the main topics in modern geoscience1 How ever, the timing and mechanism of lithosphere thinning are still poorly un- derstood1 The ambiguity of the know n constraint s and the apparent contradiction of the evidences used to ex- plain the thinning processes has resulted in a somewhat poor understanding of the regional tectonic history1 In this paper, the recognition of intraplate orogeny in Nort h China is considered as a key for understanding the thinning of lithosphere, because the thinning process is initiated at the base of the lithosphere, and not the cra- ton1 Lithosphere thinning can be divided into four types: 1) delaminat ion, 2) extension, 3) thermal thinning and 4) chemical erosion1 The former is dependent on gravit ational instability of the lithosphere and display a sudden change of the lithosphere thickness1 The other three processes are cont inuous and inf luenced by asthenospheric upw elling1 The thinning process in North China began at abo
