我们常说夏天的天,如3岁小孩的脸,说变就变。Jack入乡随俗,也学会了这句谚语,不过人家还会举一反三,换成了学生的眼泪,这是咋回事呢?
I have heard it said that the weather in Nanchang is like a woman―like a woman whose moods change without notice and for reasons that she alone can fathom(彻底了解), if there are reasons. Having seen the weather’s frequent mood swings, I believed there was nothing about the weather that would take me by surprise―ever again. I had noticed, for instance, that days when it was unseasonably warm, a strong and cold wind from the north would spring up, bringing its cargo of thick, dark rain-bearing clouds. And, suddenly, from the high eighties, the temperature would plummet(垂直落下) to the sixties, and sometimes lower. I had noticed how days of biting cold, with the wind howling like a demented man, would suddenly transform to pleasant and genuine spring-like days and the gray of the skies would be washed away, leaving the deep nothingness abovea heart-singing blue and gold.
Then, without preamble or fuss(大惊小怪), the weather decided it was time to show another facet of its character. And, one fine mid-May day, the morning dawned bright and cheerful. But, before the sun had traveled an hour from the east, Nanchang began to feel like an oven. Unaware, and as usual, having gotten ready for the day, I swung my bag across my shoulder and set out, walking the two-kilometre distance from my apartment to the campus where I teach. I had barely walked a few hundred meters when my brow began to rain and my shirt was soaked in sweat.
“No,” I said (to myself, of course), “It can’t be. Nanchang has always been pleasant at this time.” But, the weather reveled in revealing a new facet(面). By the time I reached class, I must have looked like a rag doll(布洋娃娃)! I went through my six classes of Oral English, a little distracted by the heat and the constant whirr(呼呼声) of overhead fans that seemed to dispel speakers’ soft voices more than the overbearing heat. I tried hard to concentrate on what the
