Vol No PET ROL EU M DRIL LING T EC H NIQ U ES Jan doi syztj s D X Y H F T E A The Formation Mechanism and Technical Countermeasures for Back Pressure during Directional Drilling Bo Yubing D r illing Eng inee r ing and Technology Comp any S inop ec S heng l i Oilf ield Se rv ice Co rp or ation Dongy ing S handong China Abstract In order to solve the problem of back pressure during directional drilling the mechanism by w hich it occurs w as investigated by analyzing the f orce on the bottom hole assembly B HA T hen the main f actors aff ecting back pressure w ere ex plored and accordingly primary technical countermeasures w ere proposed It w as show n that the back pressure w as mainly caused by f riction resistance betw een drill string s and borehole w all and it w as dominantly aff ected by w ellbore trajectory dow nhole cleaning B HA drilling f luid lubricity and f ormation ty pes It w as proposed to control the back pressure by optimizing w ell bore trajectory and B HA increasing dow nhole cleaning and drilling f luid lubricity and adopting dow n hole tools w hich could reduce back pressure A nd finally the application of back pressure controlling measures in Wells D X and Y HF w ere introduced It w as indicated that these technical countermeasures f or back pressure control w ere more eff ective Based on these countermeasures the f requency and degree of back pressure decreased sig nificanlty and the rate of penetration ROP also increased T he research result s provided the ref erence and basis f or the directional drilling
