In areas where bilge water discharge overboard is allowed as per MARPOL Annex I, under ‘Control of Discharge of Oil’, the following procedure shall be complied with:;When notified by the chief engineer to carry out discharge of the bilges, the bridge is to be informed of the Intended discharge and confirmed that such discharge is in order.;All personnel on duty, both deck and Engine officers are to be aware of the operation to be conducted.; ; Prior to commencement of any discharge a visual check of the bilge water shall be made, to confirm there is no apparent cause for concern of pollution.;Adequate communications shall be in use between the persons conducting the operation.;A visual check overboard in way of any discharge is to be maintained during the entire discharge operation, the operation to be stopped at the first sign of any pollution irrespective of the monitoring equipment readings. Oil Record Book entries must be made as necessary.;9. IMPORTANT NOTE: Reference must always be made to the schematic diagram of engine room bilge system to ensure operations are carried out correctly.
