Non-verbal behavior can convey more information in the course of daily communication. In literary works, the characters’ personalities are often shaped through non-verbal behavior. It is not common to do research on literary works through the analysis of non-verbal behavior, and it is also rare to analyze the characters in the literary works by concentrating on the non-verbal behavior of the character. This paper shows the characters of Nami—the heroine in Grass Pillow by analyzing her non-verbal behavior and then to demonstrate the relationship between SOUSEKI NATUME and Grass Pillow which is one of the early masterpieces of Japanese literature master -SOUSEKI NATUME. This paper first to sum up the heroine’s characteristic by analyzing her frequently-occurring smile, and then to analyze her other non-verbal behavior such as her facial expression , the expression of her eyes , her clothing, in this way we can understand Nami fully, deeply and accurately. This paper mainly focus on the description of non-verbal behavior of the heroin which aims to better reveal her characteristic and self image. Though Nami’s smile to some people contemptuous, it shows us her courage to be free from the social stereotype and presents her disobedience.
