Task a: How do you study? Note the main division here.
FUSION - WELDING
PRESSURE (PLASTIC) WELDING
Task b: What do you know about this?
We’ll make a mind map:
Task c: What do you know about each of them? Discuss with your neighbour for 3 minutes, afterwards we sum up in class.
Study the classification below:
FUSION WELDING
1.1 Soldering
1.2 Arc welding
1.3 Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
1.4 Gas Tungsten welding
1.5 Gas welding – no flame arcIn class: -What distinctions can you make out of these?
Do: Place your list of vocabulary words alongside the text, either to the right or to the left of this copy while reading.
Reading strategies:
a) Skim through the text for answers to the questions below!
b) Close-read the text and fill in the table on pp. 19-20
Soldering
Focus: -What is soldering?
-What’s the difference between soldering and brazing?
-What’s the difference between soldering and welding?
-Characterize the base metal contrary to the joint
Use a marker to words you do not understand, look them up
afterwards. If you still not understand, ask your teacher!
Soldering
is a process in which two or more metal items are joined together by melting and flowing a filler metal into the joint, the filler metal having a relatively low melting point. Soft soldering is characterized by the melting point of the filler metal, which is below 400?°C (752?°F). The filler metal used in the process is called solder.
Soldering is distinguished from brazing by use of a lower melting-temperature filler metal. The filler metals are typically alloys that have liquid’s temperatures below 350°C. It is distinguished from welding by the base metals not being melted during the joining process which may or may not include the addition of a filler metal. In a soldering process, heat is applied to the parts to be joined, causing the solder to melt and be drawn into the joint by capillary action and to bond to the materials to be joined by wetting action.
