Comparing decimals and comparing whole numbers are very similar. The symbols “is more than”, “is less than”, and = “is equal to” show up here also. For example: Order the following decimals from smallest to largest: 1.2, 1.02, 1.23, 1.5, 1.1 Hint: If all the numbers in the ones place are the same, look at the numbers in the tenth place, then, at the numbers in the hundredth place if the numbers in the tenth place are the same. .23 is not larger than .5 because .23 = 23/100 and .5 = 50/100.
