About Dr. James J. Asher Asher introduced the idea of teaching languages using Total Physical Response (TPR) over thirty years ago. His first paper on TPR (Asher, 1965) showed how language can be taught using commands: The teacher gives the command, models the movement, and the student performs the action. Students are not asked to speak, only to try to understand and obey the command. Traits 1.It uses psychomotor systems to teach. 2.Command forms used to convey information. 3.It works well with mixed-ability classes. 4.It is very memorable,and it really helps students to remember phrases or words. 5.It is a lot of fun, students enjoy it and it can be a real stirrer in the class. 6.It is very effective with teenagers and young learners. Application actually the TPR is only suitable / workable for beginners, especially children, who are active and who enjoy doing the actions. They like to act out what they learn. TPR is suitable for specific actions, but unsuitable for abstract ideas. Application TPR emphasized listening comprehension, it also pointed out that the learners were not under the immediate pressure of linguistic production in the target language. Using physical actions got across the meaning effectively to learn a foreign language. The achievement test indicated young learners made remarkable progress in listening comprehension.
