Abstract Rock break ing underw ater jet mi pact is an extrem ely com plicated process. As the view s about rock break
ing by w ater jet vary, there are many k inds of theories on its mechan ism. The m ain theories of rock break ing are summa
rized underw ater jet mi pact, includ ing quasi static elastic b reaking, stressw ave break ing, cavity destruction, crack exten
d ing break ing and dam age break ing. On the basis of th is, the prob lem s existing in the study of waterjet rock breaking theo
ry are review ed out and analysed and some suggestions for the theory study are given.
