Controlling Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria (SRB) Technical Bulletin 2-028 Cooling Systems Updated 08/17/11 SRB Defined Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria (SRB) are types of bacteria that use sulfate instead of oxygen for respiration. They survive and multiply in low oxygen environments, such as dead legs, off line chillers, and under slime (bio-film) or sludge deposits. Many investigations into cooling system corrosion focus on SRB, which are one of the main causes of Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC). How SRB Cause Corrosion The way SRB cause corrosion is not fully understood. The most widely accepted explanation is that SRB produce corrosive hydrogen sulfide (H S) from sulfate and other sulfur sources. The hydrogen sulfide in turn reacts with the 2 iron in carbon or stainless steel to generate iron sulfide. In addition to directly causing corrosion, hydrogen sulfide can precipitate zinc-based inhibitors and interfere with microbiological control measures by consuming oxidants such as chlorine and bromine. Characteristics of SRB Corrosion Black deposits made up of iron sulfide are characteristic of corrosion caused by SRB. A lighter brown layer may also be present on the outer surface. Underneath the deposit is usually a pit with concentric rings around it in a bulls eye pattern. Prevention and Control Prevention is more practical than trying to rid a system of a SRB problem.
