环境污染〖中英文对照〗（Environmental pollution control in English.） What is pollution? With the arrival of the industrial revolution, the environmental pollution caused by it is also growing alarmingly. We define pollution as an adverse change in the physical, chemical, or biological characteristics of air, water, land, which can endanger the health, survival or activity of human beings or other living organisms. There are four main kinds of pollution - land waste, water pollution (both ocean and inland lake water), air pollution and noise pollution. What is land pollution? There are many substances that can pollute the land. The main pollutants fall into two categories: degradable and non degradable. Degradable pollutants such as DDT and radioactive substances. Although the decomposition of DDT is slow, it can eventually be completely destroyed or reduced to harmless levels. For example, DDT in the soil has to be reduced to 25% of the original level of use and usually takes four years. Some radioactive material that emits harmful rays, such as iodine -131, can decay into harmless pollutants. Other pollutants can be degraded, such as nuclear power plants to produce plutonium -239 can be maintained at its harmful levels for tens of millions of years. Non degradable pollutants can not be decomposed by natural processes, such as mercury, lead and its compounds, and some plastics are non degradable pollutants. It is essential to prevent these substances from entering the air, water and soil, or to have them completely removed from the environment so that they are below the harmful level. What is water pollution? There are many forms of water pollution. It is contamination of water with city sewage and industrial wastewater; from farms and farm loss of fertilizer and manure; sudsy streams; due to heavy rain, farming, construction and mining sediment washed from the land; radioactive discharge from nuclear power plants; power plants and factories of plastic balls in hot water; drift
